Bob Smith
Common Name: Oyster Drills
Latin Name: Thais Haemastoma
Location Found: Grand Isle
Habitat Type: Salt
While walking the beach in search of new critters to discover our professor mentioned we might find Zebra Periwinkles along the rocks at the waterline. He even turned it into a contest to see who could find one first. My competitive nature was itching for a good contest and I took off headlong into the water. It was only about knee deep when I spotted one. However, it was waist deep when I took another step closer to the rock. I ran back proud of the two Periwinkles I had found only to be told they were actually oyster drills. Ultimately I had fallen into the rocks and gotten soaked for Oyster Drills.
We searched forever and never found one. What we did find - everywhere- were oyster drills. As common as petals on a flower.
Hence, Bob Smith...

ELiza Dolittle
Name: Eliza Dolittle
Common Species Name: Blue Crab
Latin Name: Callinectes Sapidus
Location Found: Chef Manteur
Habitat Type: Intermediate
Much like the character played by Audrey Hepburn, our Eliza was not much of a lady when we first pulled her out of a litter trap. Once we put her in our observation toy she calmed down so we could get a good look at our new friend.

Glasswort
Latin Name: Salicornia Eurpoea
Location Found: Grand Isle
Habitat Type: Salt Marsh
The first thing my instructor did upon my presenting this specimen was to take a bite of it and chew. He then insisted I do the same. I can describe it in two words. Salty grass. Which is pretty much what it is. It is an annually growing, "fleshy" herb that has adapted to salty conditions. It's a strange looking little plant. Looking down on a patch of it the Glasswort, or Salicornia, somewhat resembles asparagus.
The Salicornia grows to a height anywhere from four to 20 inches tall. It's a little thinner than a pencil and segmented; like a worm. Depending on the height of the stalk the segments are a little over half an inch long with branches shooting off on alternating sides at each joint.

Herman Mellville
Name: Herman Mellville
Common Species Name: Inland Silverside
Latin Name: Menidia Beryllina
Location Found: Lake Pontchartrain
habitat Type: Intermediate Marsh
Herman, though named after the author famous for his novel about a great white whale, is an Inland Silverside; not a whale. Herman was scooped up in our seine along the coast of Lake Pontchartrain. They usually reside along the shorelines of very low-salinity bodies of water. Herman is a lively creature. The species is well-known for it's energetic nature and interest in surface objects. While living in the lake Herman would likely spend much of his time swimming about in his "jungle gym" of an environment jumping over twigs, leaves, etc.
Herman is a cute little fish. The species has an average length of 3 in. 8 cm. There is also a long, thin stripe of silver on each side no wider than the fish's pupil that identifies it as a Silverside. Due to a technological difficulty the magnificent pictures i took of Herman are no more. The ones here are courtesy of Google.

Zack Addy
Name: Zack Addy
Common Species Name: Skimmer Dragonfly
Latin Name: Anisoptera Libellulidae
Location Found: City Park Lagoon
Zack is a neat little critter we pulled out of the lagoon in City Park. There are about 156 species of Skimmer Dragonflies spread all throughout North America. They generally prefer warm shallow waters and are commonly found at the edges of the lakes and ponds they live in. Zack and his relatives are also some of the few aquatic insects that can tolerate some salinity. Though they mostly prefer freshwater, like the lagoon that was home to Zack, skimmer dragonflies are also found in some brackish habitats. This species is very tolerant of environmental stresses. Some can tolerate very low levels of dissolved oxygen and other pollutants like livestock runoff.
How Zack got his name: I'm a huge fan of the TV show Bones. Dr. Addy was one of my favorite assistants and he was also the first. Hence the Skimmer Dragonfly Zack Addy. My first specimen, my first favorite.
