Herman Mellville

Name: Herman Mellville
Common Species Name: Inland Silverside
Latin Name: Menidia Beryllina
Location Found: Lake Pontchartrain
habitat Type: Intermediate Marsh

Herman, though named after the author famous for his novel about a great white whale, is an Inland Silverside; not a whale. Herman was scooped up in our seine along the coast of Lake Pontchartrain. They usually reside along the shorelines of very low-salinity bodies of water. Herman is a lively creature. The species is well-known for it's energetic nature and interest in surface objects. While living in the lake Herman would likely spend much of his time swimming about in his "jungle gym" of an environment jumping over twigs, leaves, etc.

Herman is a cute little fish. The species has an average length of 3 in. 8 cm. There is also a long, thin stripe of silver on each side no wider than the fish's pupil that identifies it as a Silverside. Due to a technological difficulty the magnificent pictures i took of Herman are no more. The ones here are courtesy of Google.
